I keep seeing references to hosting, but I have yet to learn what this involves. It must be somewhere on the site!!

Hello Trubey. In your 'My Profile' page, you will find (second section) the question 'Do you accept to host?' If you agree to host other Polyglot Members in your own home, please tick this box. Then, with 'Offer a Home', you will have to specify your personal address (which will always be hidden). Enjoy your hosting and your Polyglot surfing!
