La meilleure situation est de trouver une personne dont vous voulez apprendre la langue maternelle et que cette personne veuille apprendre votre langue maternelle. De plus, vous devez avec le même niveau pour que l'apprentissage se fasse à la même vitesse.

The best situation is to find a personn you want to learn his/her mother tongue and that this person want to learn your mother tongue. Furthermore, you need to have the same level so that the learning goes at the same speed.

Parlez avec des étrangers. Par exemple, au réunions Erasmus, Polyglot et Couchsurfing. Il est tout à fait normal de se sentir stupide, lent et maladroit. Utilisez vos mains, écrivez, dessinez et souriez mais avant tout ne restez pas passif et muet. Parlez de sujets qui vous intéressent même s'il sont difficiles et ne restez pas sur des sujets banals comme votre travail parce que vous ennuierez les autres et vous même.

Talk with foreigners. For example at Erasmus, Polyglot and Couchsurfing meetings. It's completely normal to feel stupid, slow and goofy. Use your hands, write, draw and smile but above all don't stay passive and mute. Talk about topics you have interest in even if difficult and don't stick with default topics like your work because you will be bored and boring.

Devenez guide touristique. Aidez les étrangers perdus dans votre ville. Prenez l'opportunité de parler de ce qui se passe dans leur pays.

Be a tourist guide. Help foreigners in your city that are lost. Take the opportunity to talk about what is going on in their country.

Trouvez un(e) petit(e) ami(e) étranger(e). Évitez à tout prix de parler une langue que vous maitrisez tous les deux comme l'anglais car vous n'apprendriez alors rien. Prenez soin d'éviter les malentendus et de respecter les conventions sociales. Par exemple, une anglaise sera plus facilement gênée par un contact physique qu'une française. Parlez des préjugés et des différences culturelles pour faciliter la communication.

Find a foreign boyfriend or girlfriend. Avoid at all cost to speak a language that you both master like English as you won't learn anything. Be careful to avoid misunderstandings and respect social conventions. For example, a British girl will be more easily bothered by physical contact compared to a French girl. Talk about prejudices and cultural differences to ease the communication.

Apprendre avec des textes / Learn with texts

Relisez les livres que vous avez aimé mais dans leur langue originelle. Il existe aussi des livres bilingues avec une langue sur la page de gauche et une autre sur la page de droite. Certains livres ou dictionnaires comme Wiktionary ont une version audio qui vous aidera pour la prononciation.

Read again books you liked but in their original language. There is also bilingual books with a first language on the left page and another one on the right page. Some books or dictionaries like Wiktionary have an audio version that will help you for pronunciation.

Apprenez avec une méthode d'apprentissage telle la méthode Assimil qui propose le même texte dans votre langue et la langue étrangère en vis-à-vis sur deux pages. Cependant il faudra lire à voix haute pour mémoriser la prononciation et pratiquer avec une personne native pour que cela soit efficace. Voir book2.

Lisez un des nombreux magazines sur internet. Aidez vous de Google Translate. Il existe une extension pour Firefox appelée Babelfish qui permet de traduire le mot ou le paragraphe sous le curseur dans une bulle d'aide.

Read one of the many internet magazines. Google Translate can help you. There is a Firefox extension called Babelfish that allows to translate the word or paragraph under the cursor in a tooltip.

Jouez à un jeu de vocabulaire comme Free Rice. L'idéal serait d'avoir une image et une phrase avec le mot pour vous aider à mémoriser.

Utilisez des sous titres sur les programmes télévisés ou sur un DVD ou fichier vidéo avec un lecteur vidéo tel VLC. En général, pour les films les sous titres proviennent des DVDs tandis que pour les séries ce sont des fans qui traduisent les dialogues quelques jours après que l'épisode soit diffusé. Il est préférable que le son et les sous titres soient dans la même langue car la prononciation aide à mémoriser. Pour télécharger des sous titres, voir opensubtitles.org et tvsubtitles.net.

Use subtitles on tv program with teletex or on DVD or video file with video players like VLC. Generally, movies subtitles are extracted from their DVDs whereas TV shows subtitles are written by fan few days after the first diffusion. Vous pouvez aussi créer des sous titres pour des vidéos sur Youtube par exemple pour vous perfectionner et aider les autres apprenants.

Lisez les sous-titres à haute voix dans la langue à apprendre pour un film ou une série. Prononcez les dialogues comme si vous êtiez un acteur. L'idéal est d'avoir le son dans la même langue que les sous-titres.

Read subtitles aloud in the language you want to learn for a movie or a tv show. Pronunce dialog as you were an actor. Ideally you would have the sound in the same language as the subtitles.

Utilisez un lecteur qui permet de ralentir l'image et le son, par exemple VLC. Puis, progressivement accélérez la vitesse jusqu'à atteindre la vitesse normale. Vous pourrez ralentir à nouveau certains passages difficiles à comprendre.

Use a player that is able to slower the video and the audio like VLC. Then, progressively increase the speed until you reach normal speed. You may slow down again for difficult dialogs.

You may use movies translated to the language you study or in the original language. I usually also  download a screenplay and use the follow pattern: watch movie - read screenplay - watch movie again. I suppose it's wrong to use a screenplay as a crib, because when you read it afterwards you train your memory and your  aural reception.

Another  exercise is described in a book  by a Russian interpreter. You must count aloud in your native language while reading the foreign text to yourself.  The author says that this practice will help you to  digress from the words  and to operate with  mental images and the meanings. Then write down the text as you remembered it. I tried to  do this and discovered that this method is quite difficult  to apply even to your native language but with some experience it gets easier.

I often try to think in the foreign language.
stupid example: When I'm opening the garage I think: 'okay, now let's open the garage door' in the foreign language. I don't know if it helps, but it's probably not bad ^_^

Sometimes I don't know much words, so I think something like (example with French and English, since many people know them - but I know French better ^^):
"And when I don't know where to guy, I could ask someone 'où est the location x?'"
You see, I mix the languages up and try to think the words I already know in the foreign language. That's useful if there are some differences between words.
e.g. in English: "this" and "that". You could think "that" when you're thinking about something far away and "this" for something near.

Sorry, if it's hard to follow, but I I didn't want to use some foreign language which isn't understood by everyone for the example... So now all text seems to be in native language :D
