1. I think people like to read in my country. We have many libraries, bookshop. All my freind read everyday some books. We like to exchange for opinion about only-read book. Sometimes people read all their free time. I know one girl. who may spent one for reading book with 600 pages.
2. I given't preference on one genre. I like all. As for me, I read first 10-15 page of book. If I want to sleep reading this book, I don't read it in future. Sometimes, after 5 -7 years i may return to this book and try to read it.
3. I like G.Markis, D.Braun, J. Austen
4. J. Austen "Pride and Prejudice"

Unfortunatelly not many people like reading in my country, they prefer TV or the internet, although this is not the case with me.I have many favourite writers and poets like Edgar Alan Poe, Alice Walker, Tonny Morrison, Virginia Wolf, Emily Dikinson,James Joyce, but to name a few.One of my most favourite books is 'The colour purple' by Alice Walker, I can reread this book over and over again without getting tired of the meanings it tries to pass through. The only problem you might have is that it is written in a dialectal african-american language, but apart from that you'll love this book

Although 3 years without anyone send a message, i think this topic is always up-to-date.
1) Is reading popular in your country?
Depent of what you've used call "read". Nowdays, people more than ever like to read poor literature and terrible articles in newspapers (like Paulo Coelho, for example), Dan Brown, etc. (that´s a global phenomenon, however in Brazil the situation is worse).
2) What kind of books you prefer?
Books that treats the question of death, human incomunicability, existence and also the poetical one´s.
3) Who is your favorite writer?
It´s impossible to give an answer here. Exist authors for each ocasion, for example: for memory:Proust for mankind:Exupery for beautifulness:Rilke, etc.
4) What is a book do you like?
Thousands. "Doktor Faustus" and "Livro do Desassossego" are both sublime masterpieces of humankind.

To Eowin: I don't know whether many Russian writers are famous abroad. I'd like to recommend many of them, but I'm sure that reading them in translation won't be so interesting as in Russian. For example, I saw Pushkin's (the most famous Russian poet) poems translated into English and it was SO strange to read them! But I know, that some our writers are famous in other countries. They are Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Chechov. I hate the first one(if there are any Russians, who like him, forgive me please), and I'm indifferent to the other two, but I think that reading Dostoevsky could be interesting for you. By saying that Nabokov is an American celebrity in literature, I only meant to say that he is greatly respected and admired in America as a brilliant writer, of both nationalities. Nabokov is one of the amazing writers that have the privelege to be counted a member of more than one country's culture, so it really is hard to say which he belongs to!
| Comment written by helloplatypus |
Dear American friends! I respect your nation, but why did you say Nabokov is American celebrity in literature. It is great delirium! We (I mean Russian) think Nabokov is famous Russian writer. Half of all his books was written in Russian, and half – in English. He lived in Russia, German, France, America. All of his life he loved only Russia (not Soviet Union – he hated it) and America (France and German, excuse me!). He died and bored Switzerland. Whose celebrity he is now? I’ve read all his books. But I have read his English books in translation. Excuse me, if I have offended someone. I just want to tell that Nabokov is the greatest writer. I recommend to read it to all.

1.(America)No. Most people I know don't read very often. 2. many different kinds. 3. Kurt Vonnegut. 4. Mother Night. as soon as I finish learning German I plan on reading some Goethe. never heard of Nabokov though, but I looked up his name and his books sound interesting.

Nabokov is an American celebrity in literature!!!! (although everyone manages to mispronounce his name) I've only read Pale Fire and Lolita, but I know that no American can say he/she is well-read until he/she has read some Nabokov :)
| Comment written by helloplatypus |
I'm not sure what people think of Nabokov here. Most people I know have never read any of his books, so...I think people have heard of him, but haven't read his stuff... I've read Lolita, Invitation to a Beheading, Pale Fire, and The Gift. I've just discovered Nabokov though, so I hope to get a chance to read more of his books soon.

It seems, you are right. People reacts to this theme not very well. Except for Russian. It's so pity.
