To Eowin: I don't know whether many Russian writers are famous abroad. I'd like to recommend many of them, but I'm sure that reading them in translation won't be so interesting as in Russian. For example, I saw Pushkin's (the most famous Russian poet) poems translated into English and it was SO strange to read them!
But I know, that some our writers are famous in other countries. They are Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Chechov. I hate the first one(if there are any Russians, who like him, forgive me please), and I'm indifferent to the other two, but I think that reading Dostoevsky could be interesting for you. By saying that Nabokov is an American celebrity in literature, I only meant to say that he is greatly respected and admired in America as a brilliant writer, of both nationalities. Nabokov is one of the amazing writers that have the privelege to be counted a member of more than one country's culture, so it really is hard to say which he belongs to!
Dear American friends! I respect your nation, but why did you say Nabokov is American celebrity in literature.
It is great delirium! We (I mean Russian) think Nabokov is famous Russian writer.
Half of all his books was written in Russian, and half – in English.
He lived in Russia, German, France, America.
All of his life he loved only Russia (not Soviet Union – he hated it) and America (France and German, excuse me!). He died and bored Switzerland.
Whose celebrity he is now?
I’ve read all his books. But I have read his English books in translation.
Excuse me, if I have offended someone. I just want to tell that Nabokov is the greatest writer. I recommend to read it to all.

Nabokov is an American celebrity in literature!!!! (although everyone manages to mispronounce his name) I've only read Pale Fire and Lolita, but I know that no American can say he/she is well-read until he/she has read some Nabokov :)
I'm not sure what people think of Nabokov here. Most people I know have never read any of his books, so...I think people have heard of him, but haven't read his stuff...
I've read Lolita, Invitation to a Beheading, Pale Fire, and The Gift. I've just discovered Nabokov though, so I hope to get a chance to read more of his books soon.

It seems, you are right. People reacts to this theme not very well. Except for Russian. It's so pity.

Russia has a very rich culture and literature is definitely something that all Russian children learn and love since their yearly years of life. I am quite sure that there are not many countries in the world where schools can offer a subject called 'Literature', which is really sad.
1) There are numerous libraries in Belgium, though official facts show that people do not read much. =/
2) I mostly read science-fiction, fantasy, novels and thrillers. Though I would not mind reading a good fictional detective story like "Fatherland" by Robert Harris. I like classic literature, especially English and Russian, thanks to my mother. =)
3) I do not have a favourite writer, because I am still discovering the world of literature.
4) At the moment my favourite books are "Fatherland" and "Dune". Although it may change sooner or later...

Reading isn't that popular, here (United States), I don't think. It seems that the television has taken over.
I like to read fiction, usually classics or really strange books. I really like French literature.
My favorite authors are Victor Hugo, Alexander Dumas, Emily Bronte, Nabokov, and David Foster Wallace.
As for favorite books...probably "Infinite Jest". However, I wouldn't reccommend it to those who don't speak English as their first language. It's hard enough to get through if English IS your mothertongue.
