Need YOUR opinion Okay, I'm writing a speech for school. The speech is supposed to encourage people to learn another language and therefore not be monolingual. I live in New Zealand, where we are identified as monoglots (Whether it's true or not varies, but most people with British ancestory are monoglots).
So... I want your guys's opinion/supportive argument for learning one or more languages.
To give you a bit of a background idea of languages in New Zealand: everyone speaks English. Unless you were in the bilingual Maori class at school, you learnt a second language at school or from parents, or English is your second language (mainly the case with immigrants, or people who's parents were immigrants) chances are you only speak English.
Please write your opinions/supportive arguments. I would appreciate it so, so much if you did

You are lucky to have such intersting topic :) I don't see any difficultys to write a great speach wich will inspire people to learn more than one language.
Is it interesting to be an ordinary tourist who goes to France just to relax in a 5 star hotel? And to walk to see the sights with a small phrase-book? And after the trip to tell to everybody: I saw Effel Tour!..
Just imagine if you colud know french for example. It's not only knowledge of thousand words and beautiful sounds, it's also a huge part of a world culture. It's a way to know other people, their culture, their habbits, their train of though, ets.
The communication with people from different countries is different and very interesting. You can liberalize easily and funny.
I think the problem that people don't study other languages is not in the place they are living. People don't want to study new languages because they think it's too hard and they don't know how it can be interesting. In fact is really easy and your task is to show it.
I can write a lot about this topic, but i'm at work and it's time to go home :)
Good luck with your studies!
p.s. sorry for my english :)))))) I'm still studying it.

Look, just if you can manage two or more languages, you can read any book and learn more.
And if you travel (thats very good) you can take much more if you speak the language of the country that you visit.
In terms of friends, culture, relations, more points of viuw to see the things etc..
I think that reasons are good considered.
