Hmm...first, I try to enlarge my vocabulary and learn the simplest grammar. Then I try to read and translate short simple stories, ask and answer questions about the characters/events/places described in a story, retell stories. As I feel more or less confident about a language, I learn more grammar and at the same time I learn synonyms, etc.
It's very important to read books of different genres...to practise a language with native speakers of it....to watch films, news, educational programmes.
Also it's important to write stories/compositions as it helps to widen the vocabulary, to learn to express one's ideas and just simply helps to learn the spelling.
That's all...in general:)

I'm watching films and cartoons in the original English language. I use sometimes English subtitles to understand more :) I read some English fables, try to understand my favourite songs meaning.
