Welcome to Yekaterinburg Polyglot Network!
Здравствуйте! (Zdravstvuite!) Hello!
You're welcome to the Sverdlovsk Oblast and its administrative center - the city of Yekaterinburg. Yekaterinburg is Russia's 4th largest city. Between 1924 and 1991, the city was known as Svredlovsk (Свердловск).
The famous Trans-Siberian Railway passes Yekaterinburg and many tourists stop here on their way to the Eastern part of the country.
Shortly speaking, Yekaterinburg is a large industrial and business center and it's been developing extremely fast during the last decades. The population of the city is increasing too. Today the official population of the city is about 1,4 million people. The city-center is quite compact and it leads to kilometers of traffic jams. We have one local joke: the citizens of Yekaterinburg always complain on traffic jams but secretly are proud of them since they make us kind of closer to Moscow (which is famous for its traffic problems). :)
Today the Yekaterinburg Metro contains one line with a total of 7 stations. It connects the city center with one of the largest residential district Uralmash (Уралмаш). The subway is interesting to visit since every station is specially decorated.
The city is bitterly famous for the fact that there the last tsar Nikolay II and all his family were murdered in 1918. Of course, we're not proud of it but we can't deny the history. Recently the Cathedral on the blood has been built there.
Not all the citizens of Yekaterinburg know that the city is situated not in Europe but in Asia. The boarder between Europe and Asia is in about 10 kms from the city and there you might have the unique posibility to stand with one foot in Europe and with the other - in Asia.
