Bengali Grammar - Pronouns

Hi Bengali learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will focus on pronouns in Bengali grammar. Pronouns are an essential part of any language as they are used in place of a noun. They help us avoid repetition and make our speech more concise.

Don't miss the chance to check out these pages as you wrap up this lesson: Plurals, Bengali Grammar → Adverbs → Adverbial Phrases, Gender & Question Formation.

Personal pronouns

Personal pronouns in Bengali change depending on whether they are subjects or objects. Unlike in English, the pronouns for subjects and objects are not the same. Here is a table of personal pronouns in Bengali:

Bengali Pronunciation English
আমি ami I (subject)
আপনি aponi You (singular) (subject)
তুমি tomi You (singular, informal) (subject)
সে se He/She/They (subject)
তারা tara They (subject)
আমাকে amake Me (object)
আপনাকে aponake You (singular) (object)
তোমাকে tomaké You (singular, informal) (object)
তাকে take Him/Her/Them (object)
তাদেরকে taderke Them (object)

Here is an example dialogue to show the use of personal pronouns:

  • Person 1: আমি বাংলা ভাষা ভালোবাসি। (Ami Bangla Bhasha Valobashi.) (I love the Bengali language.)
  • Person 2: আপনি কি একটি ভাষা শিখছেন? (Aponi ki ekti bhasha shikkhchén?) (Are you learning a language?)

Demonstrative pronouns

Demonstrative pronouns are used to point to a specific noun. There are three demonstrative pronouns in Bengali:

Bengali Pronunciation English

Here is an example dialogue to show the use of demonstrative pronouns:

  • Person 1: আমরা এক শিক্ষক খুঁজছি। (Amra ek shikkhok khunjechhi.) (We are looking for a teacher.)
  • Person 2: কোথায় সে? (Kothay she?) (Where is he/she?)

Interrogative pronouns

  • Person 1: তুমি কে? (Tumi ke?) (Who are you?)
  • Person 2: আমি একজন শিক্ষক। (Ami ekjon shikkhok.) (I'm a teacher.)

Indefinite pronouns

Indefinite pronouns do not refer to a specific person or thing. Instead, they indicate an unspecified or unknown thing. Here are three indefinite pronouns in Bengali:

Bengali Pronunciation English
কেউ keu Someone

  • Person 1: কেউ আছে? (Keu ache?) (Is someone there?)
  • Person 2: না, কেউ নেই। (Na, keu nei.) (No, there's no one here.)

Reflexive pronouns

Reflexive pronouns are used to refer back to a noun or pronoun that has already been mentioned. Here are two reflexive pronouns in Bengali:

Bengali Pronunciation English

আত্মসম্পূর্ণ atmasampronno Self (Emphatic)

Here is an example dialogue to show the use of reflexive pronouns:
