In this lesson, we will focus on Bengali marriage ceremonies and rituals, and related vocabulary. Bengali Marriage Ceremonies and Rituals
In Bengal, marriage is considered a sacred and important event in an individual's life. Bengali weddings involve various rituals and ceremonies that hold great cultural significance. The different ceremonies and rituals that take place before, during, and after the wedding create a festive and joyful atmosphere.
Pre-Wedding Ceremonies
In Bengal, the wedding preparations start weeks before the actual wedding day. Here are some of the pre-wedding ceremonies that take place:
- Ashirbaad - The bride and groom receive blessings from the elders in their families.
- Aai Budo Bhaat - The bride-to-be is given a traditional Bengali meal by her mother.
- Pakha Weddings - Exchange of plates containing sweets between both families.
- Holud - This is a ceremony where turmeric is applied to the bride and groom's body.
Wedding Day Ceremonies
The wedding day is the most important day of all the ceremonies. Here are some of the Bengali wedding ceremony rituals that take place:
- Bor Jatri - The groom and his family arrive at the bride's house with the wedding procession.
- Bor Boron - The arrival of the groom is welcomed with the sound of conch shells.
- Saat Paak - The bride and groom exchange garlands and circle the sacred fire seven times.
- Mala Badal - The bride and groom exchange flower garlands.
- Sampradan - The father of the bride gives his daughter's hand to the groom.
- Yagna - The wedding ceremony takes place around the sacred fire where the priest chants mantras and prayers for a successful married life.
Post-Wedding Ceremonies
After the wedding ceremonies are over, there are post-wedding ceremonies. Here are some of the post-wedding ceremonies:
- Bou Bhaat - This is when the bride and groom have their first meal together as a married couple at the bride's home.
- Bidaai - The bride leaves her paternal home with her husband and his family.
