Forming Adverbial Phrases

Adverbial phrases are formed by combining two or more words that modify a verb, adjective, or adverb. Here are some common types of adverbial phrases in Bengali:

Time

Adverbial phrases of time indicate when the action or state occurs. They usually begin with a time preposition followed by a noun or a pronoun. Here are some common time prepositions in Bengali:

  • Por = After
  • Age = Before
  • Kichhu der pore = After a while
  • Ekhan = Now
  • Protidin = Everyday

Here are some examples of adverbial phrases of time in Bengali:

Tomal kichhu der pore asechilen. Tomal kichhu der pore aschilen. Tomal came after a while.
Tumi ki protidin ghumaso? Tumi ki protidin ghumausho? Do you sleep everyday?

Place

Adverbial phrases of place indicate where the action or state occurs. They usually begin with a place preposition followed by a noun or a pronoun. Here are some common place prepositions in Bengali:

  • Ekhane = Here
  • Oikhane = There
  • Ghore = At home
  • Baire = Outside
  • Pase = Near

Here are some examples of adverbial phrases of place in Bengali:

Manner

Adverbial phrases of manner indicate how the action or state occurs. They usually begin with an adverb followed by a particle. Here are some common adverbs of manner in Bengali:

  • Uchchhe = Loudly
  • Dhire = Slowly
  • Ektu = A little bit
  • Khub = Very
  • Shudhu = Only

Here are some examples of adverbial phrases of manner in Bengali:

Degree

Adverbial phrases of degree indicate the extent or intensity of the action or state. They usually begin with an adverb followed by an adjective or another adverb. Here are some common adverbs of degree in Bengali:

  • Beshi = Too much
  • Kichhui = Anything
  • Kachakachi = Roughly
  • Puro = Completely
  • Oshadharon = Exceptionally
