Lunch is the largest meal of the day and is eaten between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. It usually consists of soup, a main course (such as meat, potatoes, and vegetables), and a salad. Dinner is a lighter meal and is usually eaten between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. It typically consists of sandwiches, cheese, and tea or coffee.
In addition to these main meals, Ukrainians may have snacks (перекус) throughout the day, such as fruit, yogurt, or milk. Snacking is becoming more common in Ukraine, especially among younger people and those living in cities.
Portion Sizes
Ukrainians are known for their hearty and filling meals. Portion sizes (порції) are generally larger than in Western countries, and most dishes are served family-style. Meats, potatoes, and bread are staples of the Ukrainian diet, and vegetables and salads are often served as side dishes.
When dining out, portion sizes are often even larger than what is served at home. It is not uncommon for restaurants to serve large platters of food meant to be shared among several people. If you are not used to such large portions, it is perfectly acceptable to ask for a smaller serving (меншу порцію).
Table Etiquette
In Ukraine, table manners (етикет) are important and reflect a person’s upbringing and social status. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

- Keep your hands visible and above the table at all times.
- Keep your elbows off the table.
- Don’t speak with your mouth full.
- Use a fork and knife to eat. Only use your hands for foods like bread and fruit.
- It is polite to finish everything on your plate.
- Use a napkin to wipe your mouth, not your sleeve.
- Avoid discussing sensitive topics at the table, such as politics or religion.
