Coordinating vs. Subordinating Conjunctions
Before discussing subordinating conjunctions, it is important to distinguish them from coordinating conjunctions. Coordinating conjunctions are used to join two independent clauses. For example:
"আমি ঢাকায় থাকি এবং তুমি চট্টগ্রামে থাকো।[1]" "I live in Dhaka and you live in Chattogram."
In this sentence, "and" is a coordinating conjunction that joins two independent clauses. On the other hand, subordinating conjunctions are used to join a dependent clause to an independent clause. For example:
"যখন আমি ঢাকায় থাকি, আমি বাসা ঘরে থাকি।[2]" "When I am in Dhaka, I stay at home."
In this sentence, "when" is a subordinating conjunction that joins the dependent clause "when I am in Dhaka" to the independent clause "I stay at home."
