In this lesson, we will learn about negation in Tamil. Negation is the process of making a statement negative. It is an important part of Tamil grammar and understanding it will help you to communicate more effectively in Tamil.
Negation in Tamil
Negation in Tamil is done by adding the particle இல்லை (illai) at the end of the sentence. This particle is used to make a statement negative. For example:

| நான் தமிழ் பயிற்சி செய்திருக்கிறேன் | nāṉ tamiḻ payiṟci ceytirukkiṟēṉ | I have studied Tamil |
| நான் தமிழ் பயிற்சி செய்திருக்கிறேன் இல்லை | nāṉ tamiḻ payiṟci ceytirukkiṟēṉ illai | I have not studied Tamil |
The particle இல்லை (illai) can also be used to make questions negative. For example:

| நீங்கள் தமிழ் பயிற்சி செய்திர்களா? | nīṅkaḷ tamiḻ payiṟci ceytirkaḷā? | Have you studied Tamil? |
| நீங்கள் தமிழ் பயிற்சி செய்திர்களா இல்லை? | nīṅkaḷ tamiḻ payiṟci ceytirkaḷā illai? | Haven't you studied Tamil? |
The particle இல்லை (illai) can also be used to make commands negative. For example:
