Burmese Grammar - Negation

Hi Burmese learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn about negation in Burmese. Negation is an important part of any language, and it is essential to understand how to use it correctly in order to communicate effectively. We will look at the different ways to express negation in Burmese, as well as some examples of how to use them.

Negation is a way of expressing the opposite of something. In Burmese, there are several ways to express negation. The most common way is to use the particle မဟုတ် (mhout). This particle is used to negate verbs, adjectives, and nouns. For example:

  • သူငယ်မဟုတ်ပါ (thu nge mhout pah) - He/she is not here.
  • ဒီစာမဟုတ်ရှိပါ (di sa mhout thi pah) - This book is not available.
  • ဒီနေ့မဟုတ်မြန်မာနဲ့ပြောင်းလဲ (di ne mhout yanma nay praw nyalae) - It's not Burmese today.

Another way to express negation in Burmese is to use the particle မရှိ (mra thi). This particle is used to negate verbs, adjectives, and nouns. For example:

  • သူငယ်မရှိပါ (thu nge mra thi pah) - He/she is not here.
  • ဒီစာမရှိပါ (di sa mra thi pah) - This book is not available.
  • ဒီနေ့မရှိမြန်မာနဲ့ပြောင်းလဲ (di ne mra thi yanma nay praw nyalae) - It's not Burmese today.

The particle မရှိ (mra thi) can also be used to express the negative form of a verb. For example:

  • သူငယ်မရှိမောင်းလဲ (thu nge mra thi naung lae) - He/she is not coming.
  • ဒီစာမရှိမောင်းလဲ (di sa mra thi naung lae) - This book is not being sold.
  • ဒီနေ့မရှိမောင်းလဲ (di ne mra thi naung lae) - It's not raining today.

Finally, the particle မရွိ (mrui) can be used to express the negative form of a verb. For example:

  • သူငယ်မရွိမောင်းလဲ (thu nge mrui naung lae) - He/she is not coming.
  • ဒီစာမရွိမောင်းလဲ (di sa mrui naung lae) - This book is not being sold.
  • ဒီနေ့မရွိမောင်းလဲ (di ne mrui naung lae) - It's not raining today.

Now that you know the different ways to express negation in Burmese, let's look at some examples of how to use them.
