Hausa Grammar - How to Use "Be"

Hi Hausa learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will learn how to use the verb "be" in Hausa. We will look at the different forms of the verb and how to use them in sentences. We will also look at some examples of sentences using the verb "be".

The verb "be" is used to express existence, identity, or a state of being. In Hausa, the verb "be" is conjugated differently depending on the subject of the sentence. The verb "be" can be conjugated in the present, past, and future tenses.

The present tense of the verb "be" is conjugated as follows:

Subject Hausa Pronunciation English Translation
I Ni Nee I am
You (singular) Ka Kah You are
He/She/It Shi Shee He/She/It is
We Mu Moo We are
You (plural) Ku Koo You are
They Su Soo They are

The past tense of the verb "be" is conjugated as follows:

Subject Hausa Pronunciation English Translation
I Na Nah I was
You (singular) Ka Kah You were
He/She/It Shi Shee He/She/It was
We Mu Moo We were
You (plural) Ku Koo You were
They Su Soo They were

The future tense of the verb "be" is conjugated as follows:

I Za Zah I will be
You (singular) Za ka Zah kah You will be
He/She/It Za shi Zah shee He/She/It will be
We Za mu Zah moo We will be
You (plural) Za ku Zah koo You will be
They Za su Zah soo They will be

Now let's look at some examples of sentences using the verb "be":

  • Person 1: Ni yanzu a nan. (Nee yahn-zoo ah nahn. I am here now.)
  • Person 2: To, ka yanzu a nan. (Toh, kah yahn-zoo ah nahn. Yes, you are here now.)
  • Person 1: Shi mai girma. (Shee my gihr-mah. It is very big.)
  • Person 2: Eh, mu yanzu a nan. (Eh, moo yahn-zoo ah nahn. Yes, we are here now.)
  • Person 1: Ku yanzu a nan? (Koo yahn-zoo ah nahn? Are you here now?)
  • Person 2: A'a, ba su yanzu a nan ba. (Ah-ah, bah soo yahn-zoo ah nahn bah. No, they are not here now.)
