As a native Russian speaker and experienced Russian language teacher, I am excited to teach you vocabulary related to dining out in Russian. In this lesson, we will cover essential phrases you will need in order to order food, ask for the bill, and talk about allergies or dietary restrictions while dining out in Russia.

Ordering Food

When you go to a restaurant or cafe in Russia, the first thing you will need to do is order your food. Here are some common phrases and vocabulary words you can use when ordering food in Russian:

Russian Pronunciation English
Я бы хотел(а)… Ya by khotela/khotel… I would like…
Мне бы… Mne by… I would like… (more casual)
Я возьму… Ya voz'mu… I'll take…
Что вы порекомендуете? Chto vy porekomenduete? What do you recommend?
У вас есть специальное блюдо для людей, страдающих от аллергии? U vas yest' spetsial'noye blyudo dlya lyudey, stradayushchikh ot allergii? Do you have a special dish for people with allergies?
Я страдаю от <allergy>. Ya stradayu ot <allergy>. I am allergic to <allergy>.
Я не ем <dietary restriction>. Ya ne yem <dietary restriction>. I do not eat <dietary restriction>.

Here are some examples of how to use these phrases:

  • Я бы хотел(а) стейк и картофель фри, пожалуйста. (Ya by khotela/khotel steyk i kartofel' fri, pozhaluysta.) - I would like a steak and french fries, please.
  • Что вы порекомендуете? (Chto vy porekomenduete?) - What do you recommend?
  • У вас есть специальное блюдо для людей, страдающих от аллергии? (U vas yest' spetsial'noye blyudo dlya lyudey, stradayushchikh ot allergii?) - Do you have a special dish for people with allergies?
  • Я страдаю от аллергии на молоко. (Ya stradayu ot allergii na moloko.) - I am allergic to milk.
  • Я не ем мясо. (Ya ne yem myaso.) - I do not eat meat.

Asking for the Bill

When you are finished with your meal, you will need to ask for the bill. Here are some phrases and vocabulary words you can use when asking for the bill in Russian:

Russian Pronunciation English
Счет, пожалуйста. Schet, pozhaluysta. The bill, please.
Можно мне попросить счет? Mozhno mne poprosit' schet? Can I ask for the bill?
Возьмите, пожалуйста, кредитную карту. Voz'mite, pozhaluysta, kreditnuyu kartu. Please take my credit card.
Сколько я должен(на)? Skol'ko ya dolzhen/dolzhna? How much do I owe?

Here are some examples of how to use these phrases:

  • Счет, пожалуйста. (Schet, pozhaluysta.) - The bill, please.
  • Можно мне попросить счет? (Mozhno mne poprosit' schet?) - Can I ask for the bill?
  • Возьмите, пожалуйста, кредитную карту. (Voz'mite, pozhaluysta, kreditnuyu kartu.) - Please take my credit card.
