As a Serbian language teacher with 20 years of experience, I am excited to teach you Serbian vocabulary related to fruits, vegetables, and groceries, which will be very useful when you visit Serbia or any other Serbian-speaking country. In this lesson, we will explore the most common products you can find at the market and learn how to ask for them in Serbian.

At the Market

At the Serbian market, you will find a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other groceries. Here are some of the most common products and their Serbian translations:

Serbian Pronunciation English Translation
jabuka yabuka apple
kruška krooshka pear
banana banana banana
pomorandža pomorandzha orange
limun leemoon lemon
breskva breshkva peach
šljiva shleeva plum
grožđe grozhdye grapes

In addition to the fruits listed above, there are several types of vegetables commonly sold at Serbian markets, such as:

  • paradajz (tomatoes)
  • krastavac (cucumber)
  • paprika (pepper)
  • luk (onion)
  • krompir (potato)

To ask for these products, you can use the following phrases:

  • Dajte mi jednu jabuku. (Give me one apple.)
  • Koliko košta kilogram paradajza? (How much does a kilogram of tomatoes cost?)
  • Hoću kilogram krompira, molim vas. (I want a kilogram of potatoes, please.)

And to make sure you are buying fresh produce, you can ask:

  • Da li su ovi proizvodi sveži? (Are these products fresh?)
  • Kada su pristigli ovi proizvodi na pijacu? (When did these products arrive at the market?)

At the market, you can also find other groceries, such as meat, cheese, honey, and spices. Here are some useful words to help you shop for other products:

To ask for other groceries in Serbian, you can use phrases such as:

  • Hoću 100 grama šunke. (I want 100 grams of ham.)
  • Da li imate sveži sir? (Do you have fresh cheese?)
  • Koliko košta tegla meda? (How much does a jar of honey cost?)
