Grammar

When introducing yourself in Lao language, you should start with a greeting followed by your name. Below are some examples:

  • Example 1: ຂໍຂອບວິທະຍາ ຂອງຂ້ອຍ ນີ້ ຊື່ເຮົາ ແມ່ນ ຕົວເອງ。
    • khâaw khǭp wí thá ya khǭng khǎwy nii sǔe hǎwm mâi thuuang-eeng.
    • Hello, my name is Thuuang-eeng.
  • Example 2: ຂໍຂອບວິທະຍາ ຂອງຂ້ອຍ ນີ້ ຊື່ເຮົາ ແມ່ນ ປີ້ຫຍັງ。
    • khâaw khǭp wí thá ya khǭng khǎwy nii sǔe hǎwm mâi pii nyăng.
    • Hello, my name is Pii Nyăng.

When greeting someone in Lao language, there are formal and informal ways of doing so. For example, khâaw khǭp jai is used as a formal greeting, while sà-baai-dii is used as an informal greeting.

To ask someone's name, you can use the phrase ຊື່ທີ່ຂ້ອຍຫນ້ອຍ ເທິງແດ່ໝາຍ? (sǔe thii khǎwy nǭi euung daet maai?). This means “What is your name?”. To answer, you can use the phrase ຂ້ອຍດີອີເມວຂໍ້ມູນເທື່ອໄດ້ (khǎwy dii eméu kham mǔun thĕeo dai). This means, “My email address is...”.

You can also share personal information in Lao language. Here are some examples:

  • Example 1: ຂ້ອຍເມື່ອໝວດໃດ? (khaowy meuang mùad?)
    How old are you?
  • Example 2: ຂ້ອຍມີພາສາອື່ນບ່ອນນີ້ແຕ່ລະພາສາຂອງຂ້ອຍ ແມ່ນລາວ (khǎwy mii paa-săa euun boon nii dtae lae paa-săa khǭng khǎwy mâi laaw).
  • I speak only Lao which is my native language.
