Expressions with Colors[edit | edit source]

In Sinhala language, we use colors in various expressions to portray a special meaning. Below are some examples:

  • රතු ඇවිත් මම දියවීමේ ගාඩ්රවලා රිදීමෙන් බැබුවෙන් පෙන්වීම සඳහා. (rathu āvith mamadiyawē gāḍravalā ridimēn babuwen penwīma sadahā) - I wear red to bring luck in my work.
  • මම සැහැල්ලුව අහිමි කොළ සිහින් ඉගෙන ගත්තා. (mama sēhalluwa ahimi kola sihin ingēn gaththā) - I learned a lot from my experiences (as) a "Blue Baby".
  • මම අපිව ශීතල් තෝමෂ කොට්ඨාහකින් යනවා. (mama apiwa śīthal tomsha kotthāhakin yenawā) - My family is from the Tomsha clan, which is famous for brownish skin.

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

Here's a dialogue between two friends, discussing their favorite colors:

  • Person 1: මම කොහොමද ඔබට දෙන්නේ ඇල්ල නිශ්චිත වර්ණයක්.(Mama kohomada obata dannē nehe chithiya Ṿaranayaḵ) (What I'm telling you is my favorite color is yellow.)
  • Person 2: මමත් ඔබට yellow පිලිබඳව කතා කළොත් ඒ නම් favorite වර්ණයක්(Mamath obata yellow pilibadawa kathā kalth o nàms favorite varanayak) (I've spoken to you about Yellow sometimes, It's also my favorite color)
