Personal pronouns in Arabic

Subject Pronouns
In Arabic, as in other languages, subject pronouns are used to refer to the subject of a sentence. Here are the subject pronouns in Arabic:
Standard Arabic | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
أنا | 'ana | I |
أنتَ | 'anta | You (masculine singular) |
أنتِ | 'anti | You (feminine singular) |
هو | huwa | He |
هي | hiya | She |
نحن | naHnu | We |
أنتُما | 'antuma | You (masculine and feminine dual) |
أنتُم | 'antum | You (masculine plural) |
أنتُنَّ | 'antunna | You (feminine plural) |
هم | hum | They (masculine) |
هنَّ | hunna | They (feminine) |
Note: In Arabic, subject pronouns are not usually used as frequently as they are in English. The verb ending is often enough to indicate the subject of the sentence.

Object Pronouns
Object pronouns are used to replace nouns and pronouns that are used as objects in the sentence. Arabic object pronouns are used similarly to Spanish and French, meaning the object pronoun is placed before the verb. Here are the object pronouns in Arabic:
Standard Arabic | Pronunciation | English |
---|---|---|
ني | ni | Me |
كَ | ka | You (masculine singular) |
كِ | ki | You (feminine singular) |
هُوَ | huwa | Him |
هِيَ | hiya | Her |
نَحْنُ | naHnu | Us |
كُمَا | kumaa | You (masculine and feminine dual) |
كُمْ | kum | You (masculine plural) |
كُنَّ | kunna | You (feminine plural) |
هُمَا | humaa | Them (masculine and feminine dual) |
هُمَا | humaa | Them (masculine) |
هُنَّ | hunna | Them (feminine) |
Note: Object pronouns in Arabic are different from subject pronouns in Arabic. Therefore, it is important to learn both types of pronouns.
