Past Progressive Tense in Armenian

The past progressive tense is used for repeated action in the past or for an action that was in progress in the past. To form this tense, we must learn the past tense of լինել - “to be,” which is used as an auxiliary verb.

Conjugation - to be - past progressive tense - Armenian

• Ես էի (I was)

• Դու էիր (You were)

• Նա էր (He/she/it was)

• Մենք էինք (We were)

• Դուք էիք (You were)

• Նրանք էին (They were)

1) Դու նրա ընկերներից մեկն էիր: You were one of his friends.

2) Նա դպրոցի տնօրենն էր S/he was the school’s director.

To form the past progressive tense, we use the auxiliary verb “to be” in the past along with the same form of the verb, which we have been using for the simple present.

Ուտել

ուտում էի	ուտում էինք
ուտում էիր	ուտում էիք
ուտում էր	ուտում էին

Կարդալ

կարդում էի	կարդում էինք
կարդում էիր	կարդում էիք
կարդում էր	կարդում էին

1) Անցյալ տարի ես սովորում էի Փարիզում: Last year I was studying in Paris.

2) Կատուն ուներ տասը ձուկ: The cat had ten fish.

3) Անցյալ շաբաթ բոլոր մեքենաները մաքուր էին: Last week all cars were clean.

4) Ես առավոտյան վազում էի պարտեզում։ I was running in the park in the morning.

5) Գարնանը նրանք աշխատում էին դաշտում։ They used to work in the field in spring.

Above we said that in Armenian the present simple tense and the present continuous tense have the same structure. Unlike present tenses the past continuous and the past simple have different structures. Thus the sentence “Գարնանը նրանք աշխատում էին դաշտում” does not mean “They worked in the field in spring.” This sentence can mean either “They used to work in the field in spring” or “They were working in the field in spring.”
