Verb Declension in Armenian

When verbs in their infinitive form get a definite article, they become nouns. For example: լողալ - “to think” becomes լողալը “the act/activity of swimming”, ուտել - “to eat” becomes ուտելը - “the act/activity of eating”, մտածել - “to think” becomes մտածելը - “the act/activity of thinking” etc.

As with nouns and pronouns Armenian verbs can be declined in Armenian. Verbs change their meaning according to the case in which they are declined. Below is an example of the verb գնալ put into the seven different cases.

Nominative	գնալ	Ալանի գնալը խանգարեց մեր գործին: Alan’s departure(going) bothered our work.
Genitive	գնալու	Ժաննայի Փարիզ գնալու նպատակը ճամփորդելն էր: Zhanna’s reason for going to Paris was to travel.
Dative	գնալու(ն)	Պատրաստ չէինք Արմինեի գնալուն: We were not prepared for Armine’s departure (going).
Accusative	գնալ(ը)	Ես հիշում եմ Արմինեի գնալը։ I remember Armine’s departure.
Ablative	գնալուց	Տնօրենի գնալուց հետո բոլորը սկսեցին պարել: After the director’s departure, everyone began to dance.
Instrumental	գնալով	Սփյուռքահայերը պարելով հայերեն են սովորում։ Diasporans are learning Armenian while dancing.
Locative	գնալու	մեջ Ցույցի գնալու մեջ ոչ մի լավ բան չեմ տեսնում: I don’t see anything good in going to the demonstration.

Here are some sentences using declined verbs:

1. Լողալը լավ է առողջության համար: Swimming is good for health.
2. Զինվորը հետևում էր ընկերոջ վազելուն: The soldier was watching his friend running.
3. Մանկան լացելը երկար տևեց: The child’s crying lasted a while.
4. Լենան շատ հոգնեց երգելուց և գնաց հանգստանալու: Lena got very tired of singing and went to rest.
5. Թագավորի միակ որդուն փրկելովª նա շատ ընկերներ գտավ: He found many friends by saving the king's only son.

Verbs are often put into the genitive case and combined with prepositions like հետ - “with”, համար - “for”, մասին - “about” etc. to form adverbial phrases and other constructions.

1. Ես Մոսկվա գնացի Լեոնտևին հանդիպելու համար: I went to Moscow to meet Leontev.
2. Աննայի գալու հետ կապված խնդիրը բարդ է: The problem with Anna’s arrival is complicated. 3) Երեք ժամ աշխատելուց հետո նա գնաց։ She left after working for three hours.
