Assamese Grammar - Conditional Mood

Hi Assamese learners! 😊
In today's lesson, we will be discussing the conditional mood in Assamese grammar. This is an important part of the language and understanding it will help you to communicate more effectively.

Take some time to dive into these other pages after completing this lesson: Negation, Future Tense, Prepositions & Questions.

What is the Conditional Mood?[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is used to express a hypothetical situation or a condition that must be fulfilled in order for something else to happen. It is often used to express wishes, requests, and possibilities.

In Assamese, the conditional mood is formed by adding the suffix -āĻ¤ā§‡ to the verb stem. For example, the verb stem āĻ•āĻ° (to do) becomes āĻ•āĻ°āĻ¤ā§‡ (would do).

Examples of the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

Here are some examples of the conditional mood in Assamese:

  • āĻ†āĻŽāĻŋ āĻ¯āĻĻāĻŋ āĻ¸āĻŽā§Ÿ āĻĨāĻžāĻ•ā§‡, āĻ¤āĻžāĻšāĻ˛ā§‡ āĻ†āĻŽāĻŋ āĻ¯āĻžāĻ¤ā§āĻ°āĻž āĻ•āĻ°āĻ¤ā§‡āĨ¤ (If I had time, I would travel.)
  • āĻ†āĻŽāĻŋ āĻ¯āĻĻāĻŋ āĻ†āĻŽāĻžāĻ° āĻŦāĻ¨ā§āĻ§ā§ āĻšāĻ¤ā§‡ āĻĒāĻžāĻ°āĻŋ, āĻ¤āĻžāĻšāĻ˛ā§‡ āĻ†āĻŽāĻŋ āĻ¤āĻžāĻ° āĻ¸āĻ™ā§āĻ—ā§‡ āĻ–ā§‡āĻ˛āĻ¤ā§‡āĨ¤ (If I could find my friend, I would play with him.)
  • āĻ†āĻŽāĻŋ āĻ¯āĻĻāĻŋ āĻ†āĻŽāĻžāĻ° āĻĒā§āĻ°āĻŋā§Ÿ āĻ•āĻžāĻœ āĻ•āĻ°āĻ¤ā§‡ āĻĒāĻžāĻ°āĻŋ, āĻ¤āĻžāĻšāĻ˛ā§‡ āĻ†āĻŽāĻŋ āĻ¸ā§‡āĻ‡ āĻ•āĻžāĻœ āĻ•āĻ°āĻ¤ā§‡āĨ¤ (If I could do my favorite job, I would do it.)

Other Uses of the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood can also be used to express politeness. For example, if you want to ask someone to do something, you can use the conditional mood to make your request sound more polite.

For example, instead of saying "āĻ†āĻŽāĻŋ āĻ¤ā§‹āĻŽāĻžāĻ•ā§‡ āĻāĻ‡ āĻ•āĻžāĻœ āĻ•āĻ°āĻ¤ā§‡ āĻĻāĻŋāĻŦā§‡āĻ¨" (I will ask you to do this job), you can say "āĻ†āĻŽāĻŋ āĻ¤ā§‹āĻŽāĻžāĻ•ā§‡ āĻāĻ‡ āĻ•āĻžāĻœ āĻ•āĻ°āĻ¤ā§‡ āĻĻāĻŋāĻ¤ā§‡ āĻšāĻžāĻ‡" (I would like you to do this job).
