Bosnian Grammar - Future Tense

Hi Bosnian learners! 😊
In this lesson, we will be discussing the future tense in Bosnian. The future tense is used to talk about actions or events that will happen in the future.

Formation[edit | edit source]

To form the future tense in Bosnian, you need to add the following particles to the end of the verb:

Regular Verbs[edit | edit source]

-ati For example:

  • živjeti (to live) - živjeta (will live)
  • raditi (to work) - raditi će (will work)

Irregular Verbs[edit | edit source]

The future tense of some verbs is formed irregularly. Here are some examples:

  • biti (to be) - bit će (will be)
  • htjeti (to want) - hoće (will want)
  • ći (to go) - ići će (will go)

Usage[edit | edit source]

The future tense in Bosnian is used to describe actions or events that will happen in the future. Here are some examples:

  • Person 1: Hoćeš li ići sa mnom u kino? (Do you want to go to the movies with me?)
  • Person 2: Da, ići ću s tobom. (Yes, I will go with you.)

(Note: In this example, the future tense "ići ću" is used to describe a future event, going to the movies.)

  • Person 1: Kad ćeš doći u posjetu? (When will you come to visit?)
  • Person 2: Doći ću idući vikend. (I will come next weekend.)

(Note: In this example, the future tense "doći ću" is used to describe a future event, visiting next weekend.)

Tips[edit | edit source]

1. Remember to add the appropriate particles to the end of the verb to form the future tense.

Here are some examples of sentences in the future tense:

Bosnian Pronunciation English
Ići ćeš u školu. eechi chehsh oo shkohloo You will go to school.
Živjećeš u Americi. jeervehchaysh oo Americhee You will live in America.
Radićemo sve zajedno. radeechaymoh sve zahyedno We will work together.
Doći ću sutra. dohchee choo sootrah I will come tomorrow.

Cultural Insight[edit | edit source]

In Bosnian culture, it is customary to greet people with a kiss on the cheek. Men shake hands with each other when they greet, while women usually kiss each other on the cheek. When saying goodbye, it is common to say "Doviđenja" which means "Goodbye".
