Dari Grammar - How to Use "Have"

Hi Dari learners! 😊

In this lesson, we will focus on the use of "have" in Dari. It is important to understand the usage of "have" in order to properly express possession and actions in the present perfect tense. The present perfect tense combines the present tense with a past participle in order to express an action that occurred in the past but continues to be relevant in the present.

The Verb "Have" in Dari[edit | edit source]

The verb "to have" in Dari is "داشتن" (dāshtan). It is an irregular verb, so its conjugation can be tricky. Please see the table below for the present tense conjugation of "داشتن":

Person Dari Pronunciation English
First Singular من دارم Man dāram I have
Second Singular تو داری To dāri You have (singular, informal)
Third Singular Masculine او دارد U dārad He has
Third Singular Feminine او دارد U dārad She has
First Plural ما داریم Mā dārim We have
Second Plural شما دارید Shomā dārid You have (plural, formal or informal)
Third Plural آن‌ها دارند Ānhā dārand They have

Note that in Dari, there is no auxiliary verb needed to form the present perfect tense with "to have." Instead, the past participle follows directly after the conjugated form of "to have."
