The German education system is highly centralized and consists of three levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary education. School attendance is mandatory between the ages of 6 and 15. The tertiary education system is highly regarded and consists of vocational schools, universities, and technical institutions. To apply for higher education, one must first pass a rigorous exam called the Abitur.
