Nominative Case[redaktə | mənbəni redaktə et]
The nominative case is the first of the six cases in Kazakh grammar. It is used for the subject of a sentence and the predicate nominative. In this lesson, you will learn how to use the nominative case in simple sentences.
Nouns in the Nominative Case[redaktə | mənbəni redaktə et]
To put a noun in the nominative case, you need to know its ending. Nouns that end in a consonant usually add -ы/-і to the end to form the nominative case. Nouns that end in a vowel usually add -н/-ен to the end.
Here are some examples of nouns in the nominative case:
Kazakh | Pronunciation | North Azerbaijani |
---|---|---|
қала (city) | qala | şəhər |
қыз (girl) | qız | qız |
ой (moon) | oy | ay |
бала (child) | bala | uşaq |
Nouns and Pronouns as the Subject of a Sentence[redaktə | mənbəni redaktə et]
In Kazakh, the subject of a sentence is always in the nominative case. Here are some examples of simple sentences with nouns and pronouns as the subject:
- Сіз қалаға барасыз. (Siz qalağa barasız.) - You go to the city.
- Бала ойға қарайды. (Bala oyğa karaydy.) - The child looks at the moon.
Predicate Nominative[redaktə | mənbəni redaktə et]
The predicate nominative is a noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and renames or identifies the subject. In Kazakh, the predicate nominative is also in the nominative case. Here are some examples of simple sentences with predicate nominatives:
- Мен студентпін. (Men studentpin.) - I am a student.
- Ол дәрігер. (Ol däriğer.) - He is a doctor.
