Portugal

In Portugal, education is compulsory from the age of 6 and ends when the pupil turns 18 in the 12th year of schooling (12.º ano de escolaridade).

Education is divided into three main parts: Ensino básico (so-called "basic"/elementary education), Ensino secundário (secondary education) and Ensino superior (higher education).

The literacy rate among adults is around 96% and among elementary school students close to 100%.

Brazil

The education system in Brazil is decentralized and made up of public institutions and private establishments. The Ministry of Education (MEC) oversees education at the national level, assisted by the National Board of Education.

Education is compulsory for all children aged 6 to 14 and is divided into basic education (infant education, basic and intermediate education) and higher education. Public education is free at all levels and its responsibility is divided between the states, the federal district and the municipalities.
