Negotiating, placing an order at a restaurant or in a fast food restaurant, or even simply to drink something, knowing how to count in Vietnamese can be very useful on a daily basis.
What are the rules and pronunciations?
If you've ever faced the Vietnamese language, you know that it is very difficult to make yourself understood, as the slightest deviation in pronunciation can give your sentence a very different meaning - or no meaning at all. However, counting remains within the reach of all and will make you gain sympathy as well as in your many negotiations.
In general, be aware that to give a price you don't have to say the thousand. Example for 100,000 VND you will only say 100.
We must emphasize the importance of accents, with pronunciations and tones that can sometimes be totally different depending on the region in which you are located.
Cardinal numbers (số) in Vietnamese[edit | edit source]
The numbers from 10 to 100[edit | edit source]
Some peculiarities for the numbers.
- The number 1 "Một" gains an accent "mốt" from the twenties.
- The number 4 "Bốn" is transformed into "tư" from the twenties (not always used).
- The number 5 "Năm" becomes "Lăm" when used as a unit (above 10).
- The number 10 "mười" loses an accent on the "o" from the twenties which gives us "mươi".
The numbers from 101 to 1000[edit | edit source]
The structure is the same with one exception:
When there is a "0" in the middle of the number, it is pronounced "lẻ" in the south and "linh" in the north, for example "một trăm lẻ một" (Mot Tcham Les Mot) or "một trăm linh một" ( Word Tcham Line Word) to say 101.
