Language/French/Grammar/Information-questions
Introduction[edit | edit source]
Information questions in French are questions that seek to obtain information beyond a simple 'yes' or 'no'. These questions often begin with question words like qui (who), que (what), où (where), etc. This lesson will guide you through the various types of information questions in French.
1. Question Words[edit | edit source]
French has several question words that correspond to the "Wh-" questions in English. Some common ones include:
- Qui - Who
- Que - What
- Où - Where
- Quand - When
- Pourquoi - Why
- Comment - How
2. Question Word + Est-ce que[edit | edit source]
You can combine question words with est-ce que to form questions.
- Example: Où est-ce que tu vas ? (Where are you going?)
3. Inversion[edit | edit source]
Inversion can also be used with question words for a more formal tone.
- Example: Pourquoi as-tu mangé ? (Why did you eat?)
4. Direct Question Form[edit | edit source]
Sometimes, you can directly use the question word at the beginning of the sentence, especially in spoken French.
- Example: Tu vas où ? (Where are you going?)
5. Examples and Exercises[edit | edit source]
Examples[edit | edit source]
- Comment ça va ? (How are you?)
- Quand est-ce que tu reviens ? (When are you coming back?)
Exercises[edit | edit source]
- Exercise 1: Match the question words with their meanings.
- Exercise 2: Formulate information questions using the given prompts.
