What is the Conditional Mood?[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood is a grammatical mood that expresses a hypothetical situation or condition. It is used to express a wish, a desire, or a possibility. In Lao, the conditional mood is formed by adding the particle เปเบกเปˆ (mฤe) to the end of a verb.

Examples of the Conditional Mood[edit | edit source]

Let's look at some examples of how the conditional mood is used in Lao.

Expressing a Wish[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood can be used to express a wish or desire. For example:

  • เบ‚เป‰เบญเบเบ•เป‰เบญเบ‡เบเบฒเบ™เป€เบฎเบฑเบ”เปเบกเปˆ (Kวฟi dtรดng gaan hรจt mฤe) - I want to do it.
  • เบ‚เป‰เบญเบเบ•เป‰เบญเบ‡เบเบฒเบ™เป„เบ›เปเบกเปˆ (Kวฟi dtรดng gaan bpai mฤe) - I want to go.

Expressing Possibility[edit | edit source]

The conditional mood can also be used to express a possibility. For example:

  • เบกเบฑเบ™เบญเบฒเบ”เป€เบ›เบฑเบ™เปเบกเปˆ (Man aat bpen mฤe) - It might be.
  • เบžเบงเบเป€เบฎเบปเบฒเบญเบฒเบ”เบˆเบฐเป„เบ›เปเบกเปˆ (Phuak hวฟa aat ja bpai mฤe) - We might go.
