酒 jiŭ liquor, wine, spirits in Mandarin Chinese
Definition[edit | edit source]
The radical for this character is not water, as one would expect, but rather 酉 yŏu,“which refers to the tenth of the twelve terrestrial branches. However, the “three drops of water” 氵 at the left indicates that this character refers to a liquid. Distinguish 酒 from 西 xī (35).
