Greetings in Tamil language

Everytime when we meet someone we greet them by saying வணக்கம் (Vanakkam):

  • Good Morning – காலை வணக்கம் – Kaalai Vanakkam
  • Good Evening – மாலை வணக்கம் – Maalai Vanakkam
  • Hi Friend – வணக்கம் நண்பரே – Vanakkam Nanbare
  • Hi Brother – வணக்கம் சகோதரா – Vanakkam Sagothara
  • While leaving the place we should say, Good Bye – சென்று வருகிறேன் – Sendru Varugiren
  • It’s Good – நல்லது – Nalladhu
  • Happy Birthday – பிறந்த நாள் வாழ்த்துக்கள் – Pirantha Naal Vaazhthukkal
  • Happy New Year – இனிய புத்தாண்டு வாழ்த்துக்கள் – Iniya Puthaandu Vaazhthukkal
  • Congratulations – பாராட்டுக்கள் – Paaraatukkal

Nandri நன்றி Thank you
Thanni saapidureengala? Do you want some water?

Vaanga, Ukkarunga Please come and sit
Vanakkam வணக்கம்! Vanakkam is a welcoming greeting that has many contextual meanings.

The common usage is to recognize and respect the presence of another person.

Veetla yellam soukiyama How things are going?
Veetla yellarum nalla irukaangala How is your family doing?
Yeppadi irukeenga How are you?
