Days of the Week in Tatar[edit | edit source]

The Tatar language is a Turkic language spoken by over 7 million people worldwide, and it is the official language of Tatarstan in Russia. Tatar has its unique writing system based on the Cyrillic alphabet. Here are the days of the week in Tatar:

Tatar Pronunciation English
Понеделек Ponedelek Monday
Сишәмбе Sishәmbe Tuesday
Чәршәмбе Chәrshәmbe Wednesday
Пәнҗешәмбе Pәnҗeshәmbe Thursday
Җомга Җomga Friday
Ишембе Ishembe Saturday
Якшәмбе Yakshәmbe Sunday

As you can see, the names of the days of the week in Tatar are similar to those in other Turkic languages.

Cultural Information[edit | edit source]

The traditional Tatar calendar has 12 lunar months, each with its own unique name. Each month starts with a new moon sighting. However, the Tatar people also use the Gregorian calendar, which is commonly used in the Western world, in their daily lives to calculate important dates, such as holidays and birthdays.

Interesting Facts[edit | edit source]

Did you know that:

- The days of the week in Tatar are not capitalized, unlike in English? - The word "әйтем" (әйтем / aetem) means "week" in Tatar. - The word "Җомга" (Җомга / jomga) comes from the Arabic language and means "Friday," which is considered the holiest day of the week in Islamic cultures.

Dialogue[edit | edit source]

To help you see the new vocabulary in context, here is an example of a dialogue between two Tatar speakers.

  • Person 1: Сишәмбе тарттым яш барында татар чатнасына бара ярыштым. (Sishәmbe tarttym yash barynda tatar chatnasyna bara yarishthym.)

(I went to Tatar language school last Tuesday after work.)

  • Person 2: Зур күзәтек, мин түгел карар күтерем һәм ойланмыйм. (Zur kuzatek, min tügel karar küterem häm oylanmıım.)

(Nice for you! I usually wait for the weekend and do not plan much.)
