Korean Folk Villages

Korean folk villages, known as 'minjok maeul' in Korean, are living museums that showcase traditional Korean life and customs. Visitors can experience firsthand how Koreans lived during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) and taste the food, wear the clothes, and learn the customs of the era. These folk villages are important in preserving Korean cultural heritage and educating future generations about their history and values.

Some of the most famous Korean folk villages include:

Korean Folk Village (한국민속촌)

Located in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, Korean Folk Village is the largest and most well-known folk village in Korea. It recreates over 270 traditional houses, shops, and public buildings from the Joseon Dynasty. Visitors can see traditional craftsmen at work, watch traditional performances, and try traditional Korean food.

Jeonju Hanok Village (전주한옥마을)

Located in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, Jeonju Hanok Village is a traditional Korean village with over 800 traditional Korean houses, or 'hanok', built around the 15th century. Visitors can wear traditional Korean clothes, eat traditional Korean food, and see traditional craftsmen at work.

Andong Hahoe Folk Village (안동하회마을)

Located in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk Province, Andong Hahoe Folk Village is a traditional Korean village famous for its traditional Joseon-era homes and preserved customs. Its most famous structure is the Mask Museum, which displays over 3,000 masks from around the world.

Namsangol Hanok Village (남산골한옥마을)

Located in the heart of Seoul, Namsangol Hanok Village is a traditional Korean village that houses five restored traditional Korean houses. Visitors can participate in traditional Korean activities, such as Korean calligraphy and tea ceremonies, and learn about traditional Korean customs and culture.
