Language/Lao/Grammar/Plurals
Hi Lao learners!😊
Learning Lao Grammar can be a challenge, but it's also a lot of fun! In this lesson, we'll look at how to form plurals in Lao.
Plural Formation
In Lao, the plural is formed by adding the suffix -ັນ (-an) to the end of the noun. For example, the word for 'book' is ເລກທີ (lek-ti), and the plural is ເລກທີັນ (lek-ti-an).
Exceptions
There are some exceptions to this rule. For example, the word for 'person' is ບຸກຄົນ (buk-khon), and the plural is ບຸກຄົນທັງໝົດ (buk-khon-tang-moht).
Another exception is the word for 'child', which is ເດັກ (det). The plural of this word is ເດັກເສີມ (det-siem).
Irregular Plurals
Some words have irregular plurals. For example, the word for 'house' is ບ້ານ (ban), and the plural is ບ້ານໆ (ban-ban).
Another example is the word for 'tree', which is ໄມ້ (mai). The plural of this word is ໄມ້ໃຫຍ່ (mai-yai).
Summary
In summary, the plural of most Lao nouns is formed by adding the suffix -ັນ (-an) to the end of the noun. However, there are some exceptions and some words have irregular plurals.
