Simple arithmetic in French (le calcul)
type of calculation | Written French | formula |
---|---|---|
Addition | trois et quatre font sept (trois plus quatre égale sept) | 3 + 4 = 7 |
Soustraction | trois moins un égale deux | 3 - 1 = 2 |
Multiplication | deux fois cinq font dix (cinq multiplié par deux égale dix) | 2 x 5 = 10 |
Division | dix divisé par deux égale cinq (dix sur deux égale cinq) | 10 / 2 = 5 (10 ÷ 2 = 5) |
NB: As in English, the verbs can vary between singular and plural:
- trois et quatre fait/font sept
three plus four makes/make seven
