Niger Timeline[edit | edit source]
- 1897: start of French colonization.
- 1960: independence.
- 1974: Seyni Kountché takes power through a coup. He ruled the country with an iron fist until his death in 1987.
- 1989: new Constitution which formalizes the primacy of the single party, the National Movement of the Development Society (MNSD). Ali Saïbou, interim president, is elected president.
- 1990: the attack on a sub-prefecture in the north by Tuareg rebels is followed by repression. Beginning of the Tuareg rebellion.
- 1991: a National Conference endows the country with transitional institutions. Ali Saïbou confirmed as president but his role is honorary.
- 1993: general elections put an end to nearly twenty years of exceptional rule. Mahamane Ousmane is elected president.
- 1995: Victory of the opposition in the legislative elections.
- 1996: a coup d'état puts an end to three years of democratic rule. Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara took power at the head of a junta, then was elected in July in a ballot contested by the opposition.
- 1999
- April 1999: new coup; President Maïnassara is assassinated.
- November 1999: civilians return to power. Mamadou Tandja is elected president of the republic; he was re-elected in December 2004.
- August 2007: resumption of the Tuareg rebellion.
- 2009
- May: the president dissolves parliament after failing to impose a referendum allowing him to run for a third term.
- July: Mamadou Tandja dissolves the Constitutional Court which opposed his desire to extend his mandate.
- August: President Tandja obtains in a controversial referendum the power to remain at the head of Niger. The opposition denounces a coup d'état.
- October: legislative elections boycotted by the opposition. Niger is suspended from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
- November: the European Union withdraws its development aid.
- 2010
- February: President Tandja is overthrown by a coup. The junta promises elections.
