Let's start with the most common drinks you might encounter in Iceland:

vatn ['vahtn] water
mjólk ['mjoulk] milk
kaffi ['kaht-fi] coffee
te [té] tea
kakó ['ka-kou] cocoa/hot chocolate
bjór ['byor] beer
rauðvín ['rauð-vin] red wine
hvítvín ['hvitt-vin] white wine

If you are of legal drinking age in Iceland, you might want to try some of these alcoholic drinks:

vodka ['vawtka] vodka
gin [jihn] gin
whisky ['vhis-ki] whisky
rum [rôm] rum
tequila [tèk-ki-la] tequila
likaðan ['lî-ka-ðan] liqueur
Brennivín ['bren-ni-vin] Brennivín (Icelandic schnapps)

Brennivín is frequently referred to as "Black Death" due to its distinctive labeling. It is a popular alcoholic drink in Iceland, traditionally consumed during mid-winter and at the festival of Þorrablót.

Non-Alcoholic Drinks[edit | edit source]

You might be surprised to learn that Iceland has unique non-alcoholic drinks that you should try:

Icelandic Pronunciation English
Maltöl ['malt-œl] Malt drink
Appelsín ['a-pel-sin] Orange soda
Víking ['vi-king] Lemon-lime soda (similar to Sprite or 7-Up)
Kókómjólk ['kou-kou-mjoulk] Chocolate milk

Maltöl is a popular soft drink in Iceland, made from malted barley. It is usually consumed at breakfast or with snacks.
