In this lesson, we will learn about the geography-related vocabulary in Igbo language. Understanding geography vocabulary in Igbo is important in order to talk about places, locations, countries and other geographical aspects of the world. Let's start exploring! 🌍

Countries[edit | edit source]

In Igbo, a country is called "Mba". Let's see some examples:

Igbo Pronunciation English
Naijiria /naɪjɪrɪa/ Nigeria
Amerika /a.mɛ.ri.ka/ America
Britani /bri.ta.ni/ Britain
Geremani /gɛ.rɛ.ma.ni/ Germany

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Mba e buru Naijiria? (/em.ba e buru naɪ.ji.ri.a/ - Which country are you from?)
  • Person 2: Aku Amerika m. (/a.ku a.mɛ.ri.ka m̩/ - I'm from America)

Continents[edit | edit source]

In Igbo, "Kontinenti" stands for "Continent". Let's see the continents of the world in Igbo:

Amerika /a.mɛ.ri.ka/ America
Azià /a.zi.a/ Asia
Australia /åus.træ.lîə/ Australia
Europe /yurəp/ Europe

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Ekpere Kontinenti g'eme? (/e.kpɛ.rɛ kon.ti.nɛn.ti gɛ.mɛ/ - Which continent are you going to?)
  • Person 2: A mala Australia. (/a ma.la åus.tre.li.a/ - I'm going to Australia.)

Landforms[edit | edit source]

In Igbo, "ugwu" means "hill". Here are some examples of landforms:

ụgwụ /u.ɡwʊ/ hill
ejìrì /ɛ.d͡ʒi.ɾi/ valley
ùgò /ʊ.ɡɔ/ mountain
mjọ̃kọ̃ /mjɔ̃.kɔ̃/ plateau

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Nchịkọta ụgwụ dị ka anyị nọ? (/nt͡ʃi.kɔ.ta u.ɡwʊ di ka a.nɪ/ - Do you see a hill like we do?)
  • Person 2: Ọ dịghị mma ụgwụ, ama eji rì m chọ. (/ɔ di.ɣi mma u.ɡwʊ, a.ma e.d͡ʒi.ɾi m t͡ʃɔ/ - I don't see any hill, but I see a valley.)

Bodies of water[edit | edit source]

In Igbo, "mmiri" means "water". Here are some examples of bodies of water:

mmiri /m.mi.ɾi/ water
ọkụ /ɔ.kʊ/ river
àgbàrà /a.g͡bà.ɾà/ ocean
àkwà /a.kʷà/ lake

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Ebe mmiri nke a nọ? (/ɛ.bɛ m.mi.ɾi ŋkɛ a nɔ/ - What kind of water is this?)
  • Person 2: Ọ dịghị mma mmiri, ọkụ ntu ikelebe ndị ọnụ. (/ɔ di.ɣi mma m.mi.ɾi, ɔ.kʊ ntʊ i.kɛ.lɛ.bɛ ndi ɔ.nu/ - This water isn't good, it's a river with crocodiles in it.)

Natural Disasters[edit | edit source]

In Igbo, "ịfụ" means "disaster". Heres are some examples:

Igbo Pronunciation English
ịfụ /i.fʊ/ disaster
ala nso /a.la nso/ earthquake
ịsị juu /i.si d͡ʒuː/ hurricane

Dialogue:

  • Person 1: Ịfụ eruption m bụ? (/i.fʊ e.rʊp.t͡ʃən m bụ/ - Are you a natural disaster eruption?)
  • Person 2: A dị ịsị juu, ọ maara m aka na m ntikọtara njem ga-aza. (/a di i.si d͡ʒuː, ɔ ma.a.ra m a.ka na m ntikɔ.ta.ra nd͡ʒɛm ɡa a.za/ - I'm a hurricane, I come with strong winds.)
