In Italian, tense is a crucial aspect of grammar as it helps in specifying the time of actions or events. Imperfect Tense or "passato prossimo" is a simple past tense and is used to narrate past actions, events or conditions that are incomplete, continuous or uncertain. In this lesson, you will learn the formation of the imperfect tense and its usage in Italian.

Formation of Imperfect Tense[편집 | 원본 편집]

The imperfect tense is formed by combining the imperfect stem with the imperfect endings, which are -avo, -avi, -ava, -avamo, -avate, and -avano. The stem of the verb is formed by eliminating the -re, -ire, or -are from the infinitive of the verb.

Here are the endings of the imperfect tense for each type of verb:

First conjugation (-are verbs)[편집 | 원본 편집]

Italian Pronunciation English
amava a-ma-va He/She/It loved
camminavo kam-mi-na-vo I was walking

Second conjugation (-ere verbs)[편집 | 원본 편집]

Italian Pronunciation English
tenevo te-ne-vo I was holding
leggevi led-dje-vi You were reading

Third conjugation (-ire verbs)[편집 | 원본 편집]

Italian Pronunciation English
partivo par-ti-vo I was leaving
sentivo sen-ti-vo I felt

Usage of Imperfect Tense[편집 | 원본 편집]

The imperfect tense is used to describe an ongoing or incomplete action or event in the past. It also denotes habitual actions, usually in the past, or physical and emotional descriptions in the past. Moreover, in narration, it is used when the speaker is providing the reader with background details, or when the story takes on a new event. Here are some examples:

  • When I was young, I used to go to the park every Sunday. (Quando ero giovane, andavo al parco ogni domenica.)
  • He was always talking to himself. (Lui parlava sempre da solo.)
  • When we arrived at the station, the train had already left. (Quando siamo arrivati alla stazione, il treno era già partito.)

  • Elena used to take a walk in the park every morning. (Elena faceva una passeggiata al parco ogni mattina.)

  • The weather was awful when we arrived in Rome. (Il tempo era terribile quando siamo arrivati a Roma.)
