April 27, 1961[edit | edit source]

Sierra Leone Independence Proclamation

A British colony since the beginning of the 19th century, Sierra Leone, a West African state with a population of around two million, proclaimed its independence on April 27, 1961.

May 26, 1963[edit | edit source]

Signature of the Charter constituting the Organization of African Unity

Representatives of 31 African countries, including many heads of government and state, gathered in Addis Abeda, Ethiopia, to create the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

April 28, 1964[edit | edit source]

Sierra Leone Prime Minister Milton Margaï dies

The first prime minister in the history of Sierra Leone, Milton Margai, died in office on April 28, 1964 at the age of 68. Known for his moderate nationalism, he was at the heart of the country’s independence process in 1961 and subsequently remained a central political actor as prime minister.

Government overthrow in Sierra Leone

A coup by the Sierra Leonean armed forces is taking place in the country's capital, Freetown. This event heralds the establishment of a climate of instability that will persist for several years in this West African country.

March 15, 1996[edit | edit source]

Election of Ahmad Tejan Kabbah as President of Sierra Leone

On March 17, 1996, the Sierra Leone Electoral Commission declared Ahmad Tejan Kabbah of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) the winner of the March 15 poll with 59.5% of the vote. This is the first multiple-candidate presidential election held in the country since 1967.

Annoce of the World Health Organization on the Ebola virus

The spread of the Ebola virus in West Africa since March 2014 is responsible for more than 1,000 deaths in a few months. The gravity of the situation prompts the World Health Organization (WHO) to announce that it constitutes "a public health emergency of global concern".
